Edward Francis Halligan, 81, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, died Saturday, November 8, 2014.
Mr. Halligan was born on January 23, 1933 in Little Silver, New Jersey.?? He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957 as an aircraft mechanic.?? He also worked for Delta Airlines for 37 years.?? He founded Halligan and Son Knives in 1985. In 1990, he became a member of the International Knifemakers\' Guild and the American Bladesmiths Society in 1992. In 1996 he received the Mastersmith rating in the American Bladesmiths Society and was the recipient of the B.R. Hughes award for the Best Knife by a Mastersmith. Upon retirement from Delta Airlines, he joined Columbia River Knife and Tool as a custom knife maker. He was the inventor of the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Super Simple) single-sided knife series.?? In 1997 he also won the A.G. Russell's Most Innovative Folding Knife at the Knifemaker's Guild Show.?? He was the winner of the CRKT best seller contest for many years, where it has been noted as one of the bestselling knives of all time.?? Mr. Halligan also had a love for Irish music and played the Bodhran and Bowed Psaltry with a group, \"Celtic Ties\", out of Peachtree City, Georgia. While living in San Antonio, he played with a local Irish group sponsored by Comhaltas North America and, in 2012, traveled with the group to Ireland where one of the highlights was playing for the President of Ireland.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Thomas Halligan and Helen Elizabeth McCormick, and two sons, Barry Edward Halligan and Shawn Halligan.
He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Beverly Ann Ulmer Halligan; daughter, Deborah Ann McBurney; step-daughter, Jennifer Ann Smith; step-son John William Whitaker, Jr.; grandchildren Katherine Elizabeth Areford, Madeline Alexandra Areford, Jeremy Minix, Alexander Lee Halligan, James Thomas Halligan, Todd Halligan, and Taylor Halligan, and step-grandchildren John William Whitaker, III, Savannah Nicole Morris, Ann Marie Smith, and Rosalie Pearl Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 2;30 o' clock Saturday, November 22, 2014, in the Chapel of Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
