Edna Day Pierce, 92, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Lamar Pierce Jr. and devoted mother to Scott, Wendy and Anita, died Saturday morning, August 8, 2015, at Hospice Savannah surrounded by her loving family.
Edna's life was one of adventure, love and family. Born in Sydney, Australia the daughter of Annie Patience Day and Robert Lyndon Day, Edna enjoyed an active youth and happy family life. During World War II Edna met then Private Lamar Pierce Jr. in Sydney at a dance. They soon fell in love & married. At the end of the war, Edna joined hundreds of other 'war brides' to sail from Australia to start a new life in the United States.
The new couple settled in Savannah and began to raise a family. Edna would become a long time member at Whitfield United Methodist Church where she made so many lasting friendships, especially with the Morgan family. Edna also worked many years downtown at Punch and Judy and eventually sold real estate. Edna was an active mother and always wanted fun experiences for her children. She often quoted her own mother in saying that her greatest joy in life was to be in the company of her children. Her home was the one on the block where the local kids enjoyed playing.
Edna and Lamar would take many trips back to visit her family in Sydney and a strong love of Australia would shape the lives of her family forever. Here at home her favorite places to visit were Tybee Island beach, Elijah Clark State Park and many spots in Florida where they both enjoyed many rounds of golf and a few nights at the horse races.
Edna was predeceased by her daughter, Anita Pierce Campbell.
Surviving her are son, D. Scott Pierce of Los Angeles, California; her daughter, Wendy Pierce Bragg and her husband, John, of Tybee Island, with grandsons, Brian Cail and his wife, Emily, Matthew Cail and his fianc??, Danyse Solomons, and Donovan Bragg; her son-in-law, Thomas 'Tom' Allen Campbell of Savannah, with granddaughters, Jennifer Campbell Boles and her husband, Rob, of Savannah, and Allyson Campbell Dixon and her husband, Matt, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 Monday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at Whitfield United Methodist Church ' 728 East 55th Street, conducted by The Reverend Dr. G. Grover Bell.
