Dudley Gardner Brown, age 88, a resident of The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, passed away on September 23, 2015 at Hospice Savannah.
He was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts on October 27, 1926, the second of three sons of John Fiske Brown, Sr. (d. 1978) and Dorothy Dudley Brown (d. 1982). He attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts before joining the US Navy to serve in World War II in 1944. Following his discharge in 1947, he graduated from Huntington Prep School in 1949. As a reservist, he was called back into active duty in 1950 for the Korean War, and again proudly served until 1952. He graduated from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and government.
He began his long career with Eastman Kodak's Business Systems Markets Division in 1954 (then called Rekordak) in Greenville, South Carolina, and held market research and sales positions in Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; Cleveland, Ohio; Rochester, New York; Chicago, Illinois; and Cincinnati, Ohio until his retirement in 1983. He moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1986 before relocating to Savannah in 2002.
In his younger years, Dudley enjoyed riding and racing bicycles and motorcycles, and speed skating. He was an avid tennis player for much of his life.
As a direct descendant of Elder William Brewster, religious leader of Plymouth Colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Dudley Brown had a great interest in the history and genealogy of his ancestors, and researching the first five generations of the Pilgrims was his hobby for many years. He was a member of the General
Society of Mayflower Descendants, and a Private 1st Class in the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Faneuil Hall in Boston. He was recognized with a 20-year membership award from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in 2014, and served as a trustee of its Edward Telfair Chapter, Georgia Society in Savannah.
He was pre-deceased by his brothers John Fiske Brown, Jr. (d. 1981) and Bradford Stearns Brown (d. 2008).
He is survived by his three children, Elise S. Brown (husband Patrick D. Berkery) of Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania; Donna B. White (husband James F. White) of Medfield, Massachusetts; and Dudley G. Brown, Jr. (wife Irina Santiago-Brown) of McLaren Vale, South Australia, along with his longtime partner, Mari Hayes of Savannah, and her family. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Amelia E. White, Owen A. White, Parker D. Brown, and Hailey G. Brown, in addition to his former wife, Jane Swicegood.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 o'clock Friday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the memorial service to follow at 4 o'clock in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service.
