Lisa Renee Stewart, M.D., of Savannah, Georgia, passed away in her home on April 27, 2015. Beloved daughter of Robert Hugh and Barbara Ann Stewart, Lisa was born in Lewiston, New York on March 26, 1970 and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Her formative years were spent attending Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, where her passion was cheerleading. At the age of seventeen, she traded in her pom poms for chemistry books when she left home to attend Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. After graduating with a degree in chemistry in 1992, she worked for a year as a medical researcher at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, before attending medical school.
Lisa earned her doctorate in medicine from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey, in 1997. Lisa completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 2002. The same year she joined Coastal Carolina Nephrology, LLC where she was a partner until 2010. From 2003 to 2010, Lisa also served as the medical director of Renal Advantage, Inc., a dialysis center.
Lisa moved to Savannah in 2010 and joined the Medical Associates of Savannah, P.C. as a nephrologist caring for patients in the Savannah and Bluffton, South Carolina offices. She also served as the medical director of PruittHealth Hospice, formerly known as United Hospice, in Savannah. During her career, she published and presented several articles in various medical journals and was an invited speaker for many nephrology organizations, including the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). Lisa also volunteered with the South Carolina National Kidney Foundation, Kidneys for Life, and Kidney Early Evaluation Program. As demonstrated by her mentorship of medical students and volunteer work with Trident Technical College, she was committed to the advancement and support of women in the medical profession.
Lisa was the best friend and beloved wife of John (\"Jay\") Parrott Whittle, Jr., M.D. Lisa and Jay were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Emily Stewart Whittle in 2010. Notwithstanding all of her academic and professional accomplishments, Lisa was most proud of her daughter and cherished Emily and her family above all else.
Lisa will be remembered for her clever and laugh-at-life sense of humor, devotion to her family and friends, quest for self-improvement, and compassion and commitment to her patients.
Lisa loved to travel and explore other cultures, day-dreamed of becoming an interior designer, and joked that she wanted to someday retire to the Cotswolds, wear comfortable shoes, and solve mysteries.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Lisa is survived by her loving parents Robert Hugh and Barbara Ann Stewart of Bluffton, SC, and devoted siblings Amy Christine Stewart of Medford, MA, and Susan Lynn Stewart of Canton, MA. She also leaves her nephews, nieces, and many friends, all of whom she loved very much.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 o'clock Tuesday, May 5th, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, May 6th, at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension conducted by Pastor Carl R. Yost and The Reverend Dr. William H. Roen.
