Dr. Roy Jesse Sims, 85, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Gene Pruett Sims, died Friday morning, November 25, 2016, at Hospice Savannah.



Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was a son of the late Chester Sims and the late Violet Pettit Sims. Dr. Sims was an Elder at Central Church of Christ and was head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics and was a Professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University where he coached Basketball, Golf, Tennis, and Bowling and started the Baseball program. He was the Athletic Director when they started the Women's Athletic program with B. J. Ford as the coach.



In addition to his parents, Dr. Sims was predeceased by his two brothers, Marvin Sims and Melvin Sims.



Surviving are two daughters, Kymberly Norton of Savannah, Georgia and Kyndall S. Joyner and her husband, Melvin, of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Gregg Sims of Savannah, Georgia and Grant Sims of Greenville, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Kristina Enus, Kacey Norton, Courtnee White, Karoline Ussery and her husband, Jason, Katherine Morris and her husband, Jody, Stephen Sims and Chase Joyner; seven great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Enus, Gabriel Vitone, Matthew Enus, Gracie Joyner, Jackson Ussery, Jonah Morris and Asher Morris, and sisters, Ruth Green and her husband, Jeff of Livonia, Michigan, Mildred Rucker and her husband, Bob, of Fairfield, Tennessee and Judy McDoniel and her husband, Jim, of Kingsville, Texas. Also surviving are his Vietnamese sons, Tran Q. Minh and his wife, Penny, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Than Le and his wife, Van, of Savannah, Georgia, and their children and grandchildren.



The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o\'clock Monday at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.



The funeral service will be held at 10 o\'clock Tuesday morning at Central Church of Christ. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
