SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Dr. Joan Weiner Epstein Schwartz, 75, of Savannah, Georgia, died Monday morning, March 5, 2012, at Memorial University Medical Center.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Schwartz was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel. She had nearly forty years of experience in education as an assistant professor, administrative coordinator, principal, teacher, and consultant. She was the Title I Coordinator in 1998 after nearly 30 years of service with the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education and School System. She had been an assistant professor in Early Childhood Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University as well as an Educational Consultant with the Savannah-Chatham Public Schools since 1998. Other positions she had included Temple Mikve Israel Sunday School Superintendant 1974-8, Institute of Jewish Education Principal 1981-3, and City of Savannah Management Analyst 1982-3. In the educational field she served on 46 education related committees since 1986, made 29 different regional/national presentations since 1985, and produced 23 different publications since 1978. She received her Doctorate in Education in 1989 from the University of Georgia. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Delta Kappa, Georgia Association of Teacher Educators, Association of Teacher Educators, and Southeastern Regional Association of Teacher Educators.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Abraham Weiner and Rachel Barazani Weiner, her sister, Gloria Weiner, and her husband, Lee Schwartz.
Surviving are her two sons, Robert B. Epstein of Savannah, Georgia and Laurence D. Epstein of Atlanta, Georgia; one daughter, Dawn E. Berlinsky and her husband, Douglas, of Atlanta, Georgia, and two grandchildren, Arielle Berlinsky and Aiden Berlinsky.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Darryl P. Crystal.
The family would like to thank Dr. Rebecca Sentman and Dr. Fred Daniel as well as the radiation and medical oncology staff at Memorial Medical Center for their outstanding care.
The family will sit Shiva on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the home of Joan Schwartz.
