SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Dr. Norman Kaplan, 93, of Savannah, Georgia, died Thursday evening, February 3, 2011, at his home.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, on June 30, 1917, he was the beloved son of Phillip and Bessie Kaplan and brother of Ruth "Rocky" Kaplan Shindell.
Dr. Kaplan attended Benedictine Military School, University of Georgia (B.S. Psychology), Columbia University (M.A. Psychology), and New York School of Social Work. While stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., he attended classes after duty hours pertaining to the Rorschach Technique, at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Kaplan served in the United States Army from February 14, 1942, until his honorable discharge as a Second Lieutenant on January 14, 1946. He also received a commendation from President Harry Truman for his service to his country during WWII. After receiving his PhD in Psychology, he practiced child psychology in Savannah for many years before his retirement.
Survivors include his nieces, Marsha Shindell Eichhorn (Dr. John), Carol Shindell Oliva (Ray) and Nancy Shindell Gavora (Dr.Les); his nephew, Howard Shindell (Lori); his great-niece, Laura Eichhorn, and his great-nephews, Phillip Eichhorn, Robert Gavora and Reed Shindell.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
