Dr. Albert Davne, 94, a retired plastic surgeon, died August 30, 2016 at Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Davne was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1921. His parents, Jacob and Sarah Davne, and his brother, Leo Davne, predeceased him. He earned his bachelor's degree at West Virginia University and a graduate degree in dentistry from the University of Buffalo. Upon graduation he was commissioned a lieutenant, Dental Corps, US Navy and served during World War II on the USS Tarawa. After the war he returned to the University of Buffalo to earn a medical degree, interning at Kings Country Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. While living in Brooklyn, he met his beloved wife, Carol Hope Bennett. They were married in 1951, later moving to Houston, Texas for his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Baylor University Hospital.
Dr. Davne had a private practice in Trenton, New Jersey at Mercer County Hospital for 35 years, where he also served as Chief of Surgery for several years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, President of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgery, and a Founding Member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He believed patients should be well informed and wrote his own set of informational booklets long before this practice was adopted by the professional societies.
He shared a genuine love for fine art and sculpture with his wife, Carol, and the gallery and studio trips they made together gave him much joy. They also enjoyed playing 'good bridge,' traveling to tournaments together. They moved to Savannah in 2004 and were warmly welcomed by the members of the Savannah Duplicate Bridge Club where he achieved the Bronze Life Master status.
He was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Bennett Davne, his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Randy Bart, of Savannah, and his daughter and son-in-law, Helene and Richard Kurtz, of Baton Rouge and his son, Steven Davne, of Miami. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel Bart, of Chicago, Matthew Bart (Joanna Persio) of Chevy Chase, Brian Kurtz, of Dallas, Laura Kurtz, of Baton Rouge, and nephew, Sanford Davne of Radnor.
PLEASE NOTE LOCATION CHANGE FOR SERVICE: The funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning, September 2, 2016, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service with Rabbi Robert W. Haas officiating.
