Dr. Manuel Lazaro Alvarez, 91, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2022, at his home in Savannah, GA.
He was born on December 17, 1930, in Mariano, Cuba to the late Jose Alvarez Bousono
and Maria Manuela Landaria Freijo and escaped to the United States in July of 1964. Having received his medical degree at the Havana University Medical School and serving as resident of the Pasteur Clinic in Havana, the scarcity of physicians and imprisonment for an escape attempt, leaving Cuba seemed an insurmountable challenge. However, after his release he obtained a permit to leave the country for a medical conference in Mexico where he applied for American citizenship and finally reunited with his two sons and wife who had fled Cuba three years earlier.
Once in the U.S., he completed post-graduate work at the University of Miami School of Medicine and was a house physician at Osceola General Hospital in Kissimmee, FL where their third child, Lizette was born. He and his growing family moved to Savannah in July 1966 and welcomed their third son, Edward in 1967. After settling in, he completed an internship and subsequent residency in Pathology at Memorial Medical Center where he was a respected and beloved member of the medical staff for 25 years. He transitioned to Coastal Empire Pathology Services where he ended his long and rewarding medical career.
While his work was rewarding, he immensely enjoyed hosting friends for domino tournaments, neighborhood dinners, traveling to Miami and spending time surrounded by his extended family.
He is survived by his children, Manuel L. (Mike) Alvarez of Richmond Hill and Edward (Lissa) Alvarez of Pooler, his brother Jose Alvarez Landeria of Miami, FL, his daughter-in-law Deborah Alvarez of Augusta, his grandchildren, Michael L (Rebecca) Alvarez of Atlanta,?? Christopher P. (Stephanie) Alvarez of Vidalia, Brandi (Michelle) Bitetti of Augusta, Christina Alvarez of Marlborough, MA, Stephen J. Alvarez of Boston, MA, and Conner W. Woerner of Tampa, FL, five great-grandchildren, Ashley Grubb, Cameron, Savannah, Landon and Brayden Alvarez and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pomposa Alvarez, of 60 years, ??son Jose A. Alvarez, daughter Lizette M. (Lisa) Woerner, sister Florentina A. Puig and brothers Armando Alvarez Landeria and Luciano Alvarez Landeria.
The family will be having a private celebration of his life.
