SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Dr. Joseph Alpert, 90, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Jane Alpert, died Sunday morning, May 27, 2012, at his home.
Born in Beachmont, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Charles Alpert and the late Bessie Mitchell Alpert. Dr. Alpert served as a Captain/Surgeon in the United States Army during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Vermont and Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Alpert was a retired vascular surgeon at Memorial University Medical Center and was former Chief of Vascular Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. He was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Alpert.
Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Jane Alpert of Savannah, Georgia; the mother of his children, Tobe Gerson and her husband, Mort, of New York, New York; one daughter, Bess Molnar and her husband, Ed, of Scotch Plains, New Jersey; four sons, Dr. Barry Alpert and his wife, Judy, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Marc Alpert and his wife, Hillary, of Penllyn, Pennsylvania, Jonathan Alpert and his wife, Laura, of Mountainside, New Jersey, and Jeff Alpert and his wife, Lisa, of Ross, California; two step-daughters, Debbie Kaufman and her husband, Howard, of Princeton, New Jersey, and Alison Shipp and her husband, Greg, of Scottsdale, Arizona; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon June 11, 2012 at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, New Jersey.
