Donald Hughes McKenzie, 97, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Mildred NeSmith Beavers McKenzie, died Saturday evening, October 10, 2015, at Savannah Square and under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice.



Born on November 3, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, he was a son of the late Daniel McKenzie and the late Viola Hughes McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie graduated from high school at McBurney Preparatory School in New York City in 1935 and from LeHigh University in 1939 with a B. S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating from college he was employed by Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. in Clairton, Pennsylvania. Mr. McKenzie was later transferred to the plant in Johnstown, Pennsylvania as Director of Training. In 1946, he went into the slate quarry business as President of Bangor Roofing Slate Co., Inc. Mr. McKenzie joined Ruberoid Co. in 1953 as South Bound Brook, New Jersey as Maintenance Engineer and, after a few years, was transferred to the Dallas, Texas plant as Plant Engineer. In 1962, he moved to Erie, Pennsylvania as Plant Manager of two plants. From there Mr. McKenzie went to the Kansas City, Missouri plant. In 1970 he was transferred to Savannah as Plant Manager for GAF Corp. (successor to Ruberoid). Mr. McKenzie retired in 1982 after winning 'BEST PLANT OPERATION' for GAF with 29 years of service. In 1974 he and his wife purchased The Christian Book Store on Bull Street and sold it in 1982. Mr. McKenzie was a faithful member of Central Church of Christ.



In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife (of 52 years), Thelma Harrison McKenzie; his daughter, Donna McKenzie Boultinghouse; his grandson, Douglass Wayne Boultinghouse, and his sister, Jean M. Jacobus.



Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Mildred NeSmith Beavers McKenzie of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Bonnie McKenzie Lummus of Atlanta, Texas; one step-daughter, Linda Q. Riggs of Hinesville, Georgia; one step-son, Fred C. Quarles of Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren, Danny Douglas, Michelle Hagins, Donald James Boultinghouse and Betsy Boultinghouse Pittman; ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.



The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at Central Church of Christ ' 632 Stephenson Avenue.



A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at Central Church of Christ conducted by Minister Jason M. Gambol. Private interment was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
