Donald William Gwin, Sr. 95, of Savannah, GA formerly residing at Yorkville, GA, died Monday morning, August 1st at St. Joseph\'s Hospital after a short illness.
Donald was born at Rensselaer, IN. August 10th 1926 to the late Leon and Mildred Gwin. Donald was of the Methodist faith and attended Dallas First Methodist Church, Dallas GA.
Donald served in the Navy during World War II and was at Pearl Harbor when victory over Japan was announced. He would often reminisce how the victory celebration noise was deafening.?? He then continued his Naval career serving in the Philippines where he was honorably discharged. After working as a civilian there he returned to the US as a Merchant Marine.
He attended the University of Tampa in Florida and graduated with dual degrees in Math and Physics with a minor in Chemistry. He worked as a electrical engineer with Honeywell Corp, Mitre Corp, CocaCola and helped with the designs of numerous cement and bottling plants. During his career his design work included top secret weaponry used in the Vietnam conflict. At CocaCola he was on the design team that developed the pop tab ring to replace pull tabs on soda cans. His also shared that some of his contracted work with NASA included designs for the US Space Shuttle program.
Upon his retirement from his professional career he volunteered as an Assistant Scout Master with Boy Scout Troupe 773-Post 2773 in Pauling County and achieved the status of Order of the Arrow and Wood Badge Beads. He used his college degrees to tutor math, science, computer science and physic at Kennesaw State University. He designed and built his 3rd sailboat, worked on and restored antique engines. He was an avid reenactor in black powder, SCA re-enactments, and a Star Trek cosplayer of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his first wife Ann, his second wife Marie and younger brother Jim. He is survived by his children Agnes Cannella (Frank),Yolanda Campbell (Matthew), and Donnie Gwin (Aurora). His grandchildren include Jacquelyn Cannella Cate(Alex), Kaitlyn, Liam, and Heather Gwin and Gwendolyn Campbell. In his late years, Donald was able to enjoy life with his great grandchildren Logan, Amelia and Robert Cate.
A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
