Donald Paul Gellins, 82, passed away on August 22, 2015. Known affectionately as 'Donny' to his Northern, and 'Gil' to his Southern loved ones, Don was born on February 5, 1933 in the Bronx, N.Y., the youngest of 5 children. He headed South for service in the Air Force in 1952, and while visiting at the Jewish Educational Alliance, he met Doris Waldman, who also was born in New York but had moved south with her family. They married in April, 1956, and had two daughters, Lee and Amy. After 36 happy years of marriage, Doris passed away in 1992.
Don worked at Chatham Steel Corporation for almost 30 years, retiring in 1992. In retirement, he volunteered for several agencies, including treatment facilities, the Better Business Bureau, and the Savannah Speech and Hearing Center.
In 1999, he married Beverly Cooperman, Doris' cousin and their dear friend. Don and Bev greatly enjoyed their time together until Beverly passed away in 2009.
Don is survived by his daughters, Lee Gellins of Savannah, and Amy Gellins (Tad MacMillan) of Athens, Ga.; Ellen Levin (Arnie) of Charleston, S.C. and Sherrie Ertischek (Joel) of Nashville, TN; his granddaughters, Dory Julia Gellins MacMillan (the apple of his eye, who she called 'GranDon'),Tara and Allison Ertischek, Lauren Rountree, Melissa Solomon, and grandson, Lance Solondz; his sister, Rosalynd Graime of New Jersey; and many beloved nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and granddogs.
Don was very intelligent, a hard worker, a good listener, and a valued mentor to many.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery.
Visitors are welcomed after the service until 9 p.m. at the home of Don's special niece and nephew, Carol & Hugh Minkovitz.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don's name may be made to Congregation Agudath Achim (Ralph & Pauline Tenenbaum Chevra Kadisha Fund or Rabbi Jerry Potack Camp Ramah Fund) or a charity of your choice.
