Donald Owen Fowler of Savannah passed away peacefully at home Friday, January 5, 2024. He was 89.
Born September 2, 1934, in Shoals, N.C., he was the son of Robert Wesley and Ruby Owen Fowler. A resident of Savannah since 1993, he previously lived in Asheville, N.C.
Don was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as Treasurer and then President of the Student Body. He began working for Wachovia Bank in 1956 as a trust office until the time of his retirement in 1996.
Don was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Isle of Hope where he served on the clergy search committee. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Savannah South, and previously served as president of the Rotary Club of Asheville and the Rotary Club of Morganton (N.C.). He served on the boards of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina, the vestry of Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville and the Boy Scouts of America-Daniel Boone Council in Asheville. He was a member of the U.S. Army and Air Force Reserves.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Anna; sons, Michael G. Fowler of Alexandria, Va., and Donald Scott Fowler and wife Lydia of Asheville, N.C.; granddaughter, Delia Fowler; brother-in-law, Ron Willard of Clemmons, N.C.; sister-in-law, Sandy Binder of Vero Beach, Fla.; and 12 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Willard.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Isle of Hope, Ga.
