Donald Erwin 'Red' Evans, 93, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Sara Louise Joiner Evans, died Monday evening, July 6, 2015, at his home and surrounded by his family.
Born 'September 6, 1921, in Clito, Georgia, he was a son of the late James Racer Evans and the late Della Burke Evans. Red lived there until he married Louise in 1942. In July of that year he was drafted into the United States Army. He landed in Normandy and fought his way across Europe all the way to Germany. In September 1945 Red was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He and Louise then moved to Savannah. Red was employed by Savannah Machine and Foundry for 26 years and was a member of the Boilermakers Union #26. He also traveled for Backus Cadillac until he retired at the age of 90. Red was a member of the American Legion and Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
His favorite pastime was bass fishing and he was an avid NASCAR fan.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Louise; one son, Donald Jerry Evans and his wife, Linda; two daughters, Linda Louise Beeson and her husband, Steve, and Donna Evans Petty and her husband, Mike, and three grandchildren, Sherrie Evans Nettles, Drew Evans Petty and Sean Ryan Evans.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o'clock Friday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the graveside, Clito Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Robert J. Belanger.
