Danyse Greenwald Edel was born to Herbert and Dorothy Greenwald in Macon, Georgia on May 28th, 1931 and passed away peacefully at home on February 28, 2023 with her husband, Julius by her side, as he devotedly has been for the past 70 years.
Danyse graduated from Miller High School in Macon before attending Briarcliff Manor and then the University of Georgia. She and Julius were married in 1952 and had a daughter, Cathy Edel Solomons, and a son, Kenneth Michael Edel.
During the various postings while Julius was served in the military, Danyse taught elementary school in four different states. Upon his discharge from active duty, they established their home in Savannah, where Danyse helped begin the Art Department at Savannah Country Day School and took great delight over the many subsequent years when past students would tell her of the impact she had on their personal development. She and Julius later created an endowment for the SCDS Art Department. After her time at SCDS, Danyse continued to teach art classes at several institutions, among them: The Telfair Museum, the Jewish Education Alliance, Benedictine Military Academy, and the Savannah Science Museum.
Danyse had a great heart, which led her, with Julius, to found the Edel Caregiver Institute at Hospice Savannah. Modeled after the only other such program in the state, which was created by President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, the ECI provides invaluable education and support for those who choose or find themselves thrust into the vitally import role of caregiver. Danyse’s other community service and involvements included: Savannah Symphony Women’s Guild (past-president), Savannah Symphony Board, Royce Learning Center (past-president), and teaching Sunday School at Congregation Mickve Israel. She was also a lifelong member of Congregation Mickve Israel, the Chatham Club and the Savannah Golf Club.
Unable to travel much while raising a family and supporting Julius’ career, the two of them made up for lost time upon his retirement; traveling the world, collecting art, and making new friends wherever they went.
Danyse was predeceased by her son, Ken, and is survived by her husband, Julius; daughter, Cathy Solomons (Philip); sister, Peggy Good; brother, Dr. Herbert Greenwald of Macon; granddaughters, Delia Solomons (Adam Shapiro), Danyse Cail (Matt), Claire Musial (Paul), and Lauren Gaspard (Christopher) as well as four great-grandchildren and many devoted nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the diligent and loving support of caregivers: Janice Oglestree, Sonya Green, Deedra Thomas, Nicole Hill, Wanda Ward, Mel Fireall, Mylene Mintz, and Lovelace Young.
The funeral service will take place at 10 o’clock, Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Robert W. Haas of Congregation Mickve Israel.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances might be made to the charity of your choice.
