CW3 Robert 'Bob' Widener, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 76, of Sunbury, Georgia and husband of Susan P. Widener, died Wednesday afternoon, July 31, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Born in Aiken, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Robert Isaac Widener and the late Fanny Key Widener. Mr. Widener retired from the United States Army after more than 20 years of service, including service during the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Widener Broom, Hazel Renfrow Rosier, and Delores Widener Dicks.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Susan P. Widener of Sunbury, Georgia; two sons, Ronnie D. Widener and Robert D. Widener, both of Chapin, South Carolina; a daughter, Janette Widener Overton and her husband, The Reverend Mark Alan Overton, of Bristol, Tennessee; ten grandchildren, Robbie Overton, David Overton and his wife, Jessica Howard Overton, Madison Widener, Justin Widener, Conner Watson, M.J. Overton, Savannah Widener, Zachary Widener, Katelyn Overton, and Grayson Widener; two sister, Evelyn Widener Carter of Beach Island, South Carolina and Louise Widener Hutto and her husband, Joe, of Aiken, South Carolina, one brother-in-law, William Broom, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 Friday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment, with full military honors, will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
