CPO Lawton Mathis, United States Coast Guard (Ret.), 78, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Glenice Creech Mathis, died Monday morning, December 19, 2016, at St. Joseph's Hospital.



Born in Telfair County, Georgia, he was a son of the late Clayton Mathis and the late Ollie Mae Brewer Mathis. Lawton was an active member of White Bluff United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class. He loved helping the elderly and volunteering behind the scenes at his church. Lawton retired from the United States Coast Guard as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service. He later retired from A. W. Williams Inspection Company after 25 years as a timber inspector at Atlantic Wood Industries. For 8 years he was an avid runner in 5k races.



Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Glenice Creech Mathis of Savannah, Georgia; one son, Douglas 'Doug' Lawton Mathis of Jacksonville, Florida; two grandchildren, Zachary Lawton Mathis and Quinn Leslie Mathis; three sisters, Lynn Bonnette and her husband Glenn, of Warner Robins, Georgia, Oveda Ashley of McRae, Georgia and Geraldine McMillan of Albany, Georgia; two brothers, Richard Mathis and his wife, Joyce, of Centerville, Georgia and Charles Mathis and his wife, Ann, of McRae, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.



The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 o'clock Thursday, December 29, 2016, at White Bluff United Methodist Church ' 11911 White Bluff Road.



The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, December 29, 2016, at White Bluff United Methodist Church conducted by The Reverend John A. Haney. Interment in Union Springs Baptist Church near Hazlehurst will be at a time and date to be announced.
