Clara Eppes Evans, 95, died peacefully Jan. 4, 2024, surrounded by family.
Mrs. Evans was born May 20, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA., educated in the public school system of Athens, Ga., and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1948.
In 1948, she married James Patrick Evans, whom she met during a winter quarter chemistry class at UGA. She helped support him through his medical education at the Medical College of Georgia by teaching first grade in Augusta and Athens public schools.
Clara and her husband spent two years in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was stationed at the U.S. Army Hospital. While in Germany, Clara was introduced to her maternal grandparents and two aunts in Stuttgart.
On return to the United States with two young children, she settled down as a mother and homemaker. Clara was a staunch member of the Episcopal church, especially Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, and St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Savannah.
Clara had a peaceful personality, and was a talented seamstress and painter who loved making arts and crafts.
She was a mother of five children with her son Robert Patrick Evans (Kathy) predeceasing her.
She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Dr. James Patrick Evans; two daughters, Lynn Moses and Nancy Relyea; two sons, Randolph Evans (Eloise) and David Evans (Cathy); eight grandchildren, Karen Moses, Leslie Moses, Mason Evans (Katie), Jordan Evans, Erin Cortesi (Trevor), Lindsay Evans, Margaret Evans, Thomas Evans; and four great-grandchildren, Luke, Chloe and Clara Evans, and Harleigh Cortesi.
The funeral is Wed. Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. with visitation at noon-2 p.m. at St. Michael’s & All Angels Episcopal Church in Savannah.
