SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Cherie Minkovitz, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Sol Bernard Minkovitz, died Tuesday morning, March 9, 2010, at her home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Harry Marcus and the late Tillie Mintz Marcus. Mrs. Minkovitz was a member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob. She attended public schools in New York, Savannah, Georgia and Houston, Texas. Mrs. Minkovitz was a graduate from The University Hospital School of Nursing in Augusta, Georgia and practiced Obestrical Surgery for six months at Western-Reserve Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She was certified by the State of Georgia Public Health, the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review and was registered in the state of California as well as Georgia. She worked as a surgical nurse and PRN - floor duty at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, a surgical nurse, specializing in orthopedic and neurological cases, a utilization review nurse, coordinator, specializing in antibiotic and blood audits. Mrs. Minkovitz also worked at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia for over thirty years and was an operating room nurse. She was as an on-site review coordinator for Georgia Medical Care Foundation conducting Medicare audits. She also worked at the Georgia Center of Cancer Statistics at Emory University and she was a consultant with attorneys for medical malpractice. Mrs. Minkovitz assisted with the first open heart surgery performed in Savannah. She continued to have an active nursing license. She also enjoyed golf, swimming, travel, art and antiques.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased in death by her brother, Murray Marcus and her sister, Shirley Dinerman. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Jason Roach.
Surviving are one daughter; Tara Sadler and her husband, Gary, of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Brian Minkovitz and his wife, Diane, of Savannah, Georgia, Ross Minkovitz and his wife, Giuliana of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren, Scott and Bari Sadler, Heather Roach, Kevin, Jacob and Sophia Minkovitz and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
