On Sunday, May 8, 2022, Charles R. Warnock Jr. passed away at age 85 after suffering with Parkinson's Disease for many years.
Charles was born in Bulloch County, GA on March 31, 1937, to Charles Robal Warnock Sr. and Elizabeth Glisson Warnock. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1955 where he met the love of his life, Mary Lee Smith Warnock, whom he married in 1958. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Charles is survived by a daughter Leslie W. Malchak (Tim), a sister Carolyn W. Lehman, a brother Richard H. Warnock Sr., granddaughters Alyssa and Katherine Tillman, great granddaughter Lilia Tillman, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Throughout his life, Charles had a special love for all aspects of the natural world. He participated in various activities dedicated to gaining knowledge and protecting birds, reptiles and other creatures. He was most at home at the helm of a boat on the waterways of the coast or paddling along the Ogeechee river. He was an excellent photographer and captured many beautiful images of wild flora and fauna seen along his travels. He was an avid birder and a founding member of the Ogeechee Audubon Society. He was a participant and leader of many sea turtle nesting projects along the Georgia Coast as well as in Costa Rica and Belize. He and Mary Lee spent many years building and installing more than 125 Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes in Chatham, Bryan and Bulloch Counties and documenting the success of those nests which yielded over a thousand fledgling bluebirds.?? Charles worked as a volunteer for the U.S Fish and Wildlife service on the Savannah River and Wassaw Island Refuges. He logged over 10,000 volunteer hours over 20 years, earning him two NFWS Regional Director\'s Awards in 1993 and 1995 and a National Service and Volunteerism Award in 1996.
Charles was always quick to share his knowledge about and love for the natural world with others whom he encountered throughout his life. For this he is remembered with fondness and gratitude by many.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 o'clock Friday evening, May 13, 2022, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday, May 14, 2022, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will take place at 4:30 at the Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery ' 9566 Mud Road, Brooklet, Georgia.
