C. Louis Hohenstein, Jr., 87, of Savannah, Ga. passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, after a courageous two year battle with ALS/Lou Gehrig\'s Disease.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, December 14, 2017, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Anne Hohenstein, Mr. Hohenstein was a longtime resident of Atlanta but retired to his hometown at the beloved coastal community of Wilmington Island.
After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1952, Mr. Hohenstein joined the school\'s naval ROTC, and later served as a naval officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietam.
A letter of commendation from the ship's captain was bestowed on Mr. Hohenstein after he masterfully avoided what would have been a disastrous overnight collision from an oncoming U.S. destroyer. Surely, the carrier\'s captain was thankful Mr. Hohenstein had the overnight shift as Underway Officer of the Deck running the carrier from the ship\'s bridge.
\"Dad was very proud of that honor and loved serving in the Navy overseas\" recalls his daughter Lynn. \"That letter of commendation was framed and proudly hung on the wall of his office for many years.\"
Mr. Hohenstein returned to Georgia Tech after his Navy stint to earn his master\'s degree in industrial engineering and began a successful career as a consultant. He later became a residential real estate investor of historic properties in Ansley Park.
Mr. Hohenstein was an avid writer, and the author of four books published nationally, and several hundred magazine articles on business, technical, and popular subjects. As a family genealogist, he assembled over 1,300 ancestors and relatives, most of which are his wife\'s ancestors and relatives dating back to 12th Century England.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Hohenstein is survived by a son, C. Louis Hohenstein III.
