SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Chaim Melamed, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, widower of Maryla Krause Melamed, died Saturday morning, February 12, 2011, at his home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Chaim was a holocaust survivor. Born in Zelechow, Poland, he was 13 years old when the war broke out. He and his family were taken by the Nazis to the Lodz ghetto until 1944 when he was sent to the Auschwitz death camp. Somehow he survived the camps and even when war was effectively over and the Nazis marched 1000 of the remaining prisoners on a "death march," he was one of only 73 people who survived at liberation time at Bergen-Belsen death camp. Later on he found out that he was the only one out of 6,000 people from his village that survived the war.
He married Maryla Krause in 1946, had a child Helena in 1947, and immigrated to Savannah in 1949 where he had a son Milton. He owned a number of small businesses in Savannah including Georgia Farms, Mel's Market and Mel's Package shop. He retired and moved to Florida in 1982, but moved back to Savannah several years ago.
Mr. Melamed felt that his mission was to educate everyone about the danger of hatred and racism. He spoke to many schools, colleges, churches and army bases to ensure that present and future generations never forget the horrors of the holocaust. He felt that it is the present generation's responsibility to insure that history would not be repeated.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Helena Melamed Silvers and his brother and sister in-law, Jerry and Esther Krause.
Surviving are one son, Milton Melamed and Susan Brocaglia, of Florham Park, New Jersey; a daughter in-law, Phyllis Melamed of Denville, New Jersey; two granddaughters, Lisa Silvers Kaminsky and her husband Danny of Savannah, Georgia, Laurie Silvers Ross of Savannah, Georgia; two grandsons, Brandon Melamed and Trevor Melamed M.D., both of New Jersey; two great-grandchildren, Helena Wells and Robert Adger Ross of Savannah; his nieces, Regina Richman and Ellen Einstein and his cousins, Kalman Baruch and Bronia Krause.
The graveside service will be held at 4:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Bonaventure Cemetery. The family will sit shiva at the home of Lisa and Danny Kaminsky at 402 Megan Court Sunday after services and Monday to receive visitors.
Remembrances may be given to the Kaminsky Holocaust Fund or the Jewish Educational Alliance both at 5111 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
