SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Catherine Mewborn Lamas, age 91 passed away peacefully at home in Savannah on March 8, 2010.
Born in Duplin County, NC, she moved to Savannah with her family in 1929.  While in high school, she met her future husband, Joaquin Lamas, a native of Cuba.  They were married in 1939 and moved to Havana, where she was a homemaker and raised their two children.  In 1960, following political turmoil, the family returned to Savannah, where she began her work career at J.C. Penney, retiring after many years of service.
Catherine was always kind, positive and gentle.  She was known for her loyalty, hard work and brilliant smile.  Her devotion to her family, her church and her garden filled her days.  She faced every difficulty with good humor and a sense of adventure.  She and her husband traveled the world, making friends everywhere they went.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette Bowers and son-in-law Jim of Watkinsville, Georgia and a son Tom Lamas and daughter-in-law Jo of Savannah.  She is also survived by two sisters, Edna Crews of Florida and Jean Southwell Sims of Savannah, as well as 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Thursday evening at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning at the graveside, Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend Earnie T. Pirkle.
