Catherine Atkins Fagin, age 83 , died of complications of Parkinson's disease.
She was the daughter of Pauline and Griff Atkins and grew up in North Carolina where she graduated valedictorian from Rocky Mount High School. She attended Salem College in Winston Salem and then graduated from Meredith College with a degree in math education. When she moved to Savannah she attended Armstrong College and obtained her Master's in Education. In the ensuing years she taught in both public and private schools and lastly taught math at The Savannah Country Day School for twenty years.
Following retirement Catherine volunteered in the public school system as well as her beloved Savannah Country Day School. She also made a new career of volunteering at the 1996 Summer Olympics, was a Docent at the Green-Meldrim House, was active in the Savannah Historic Foundation, especially the Downtown Tour of Homes, and was an active member of the Downtown Garden Club. Catherine was a member and served on various committees at Wesley Monumental Methodist Church and volunteered in various projects at Congregation Mickve Israel where she once served as Administrator of the Sunday School.
In 1980 Catherine married Dr. Ronald Fagin and they put together a blended family with five children: Garland Chick (Mary Anna), Steve Chick (Mary Holmes), Catherine Chick Norton (Tom), Meredith Fagin Malcom (Mike), and Kimberly Fagin Slatkovsky (Ken) as well as twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, July 30, 2021, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Robert W. Haas.
