Captain Georgia Elizabeth Spellman, United States Navy (Ret.), 89, of Savannah, Georgia, died Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2020, at her home.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Murtaugh Anthony Spellman, Sr. and the late Marie Ballantyne Spellman. Georgia was a lifelong communicant of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. She graduated from St. Vincent's Academy, St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, and later earned her Bachelor of Nursing from Boston University. Georgia retired as a United States Navy Captain having served aboard the USS Repose hospital ship during the Vietnam War.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William 'Bill' Thomas Spellman and Murtaugh Anthony 'M.A.' Spellman, Jr.
Survivors include one niece, Marcia Clarke and her husband, Bill; two nephews, Steve Spellman and his wife, Maureen, and Dr. John Spellman and his wife, Sherri; great-nieces and great-nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial, with full military honors, will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, June 26, 2021, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist conducted by the Reverend J. Gerard Schreck and the Reverend Joseph A. Smith. Private interment was in the Catholic Cemetery.
