Calvin Coolidge Thigpen, 89, died peacefully just after midnight May 27, 2016. Mr. Thigpen was born in Wrightsville, GA to John Roy Thigpen and Mattie Mae Thigpen. When he was a child the family moved to Isle of Hope and lived for a short time in the caretaker's cottage at Wormsloe Plantation until moving into their home on Parkersburg Road. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1949. He had a long career as an auto mechanic and subsequently retired from his own shop. In 1976 he moved to Chimney Creek at Tybee Island where he lived for the next 30 years with his wife Carolyn. An avid golfer, he played twice a week with a group of friends until his heart began to weaken him.
Mr. Thigpen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and best friend Carolyn Thigpen, and brothers, Fred Thigpen, Forrest Thigpen, Bennie Thigpen, Paul Thigpen, and Milton Thigpen.
He is survived by his son, Ebbie R. Thigpen (Susan), daughter, Deborah T. Chapman, step-children Mike Isgett (Debra), Steve Isgett (Phyllis), grandchildren Todd Thigpen, Lori Thigpen, Allison Thigpen-Covington (Guy), Arthur Davis (Evie), step-grandchildren Tracy Price (Bobby), Jamie Isgett (April), Randy Tingen, and Allen Isgett (Bridgette).
Visitation with family will be Sunday, May 29, 2016, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Mr. Thigpen's home on Wilmington Island.
