SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Burney "Sammy" Cobb, 84, of Savannah, Georgia, widower of Ida Mae Powell Cobb, died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011, at his home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Cobbtown, Georgia, he was a son of the late Melvin Cobb and the late Carrie Sewell Cobb. Mr. Cobb was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Navy veteran and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 660 in Thunderbolt. Mr. Cobb retired as a truck driver after 37 years of service with Union Camp. In his younger years he played baseball for the Cobbtown Spots.
Surviving are two daughters, Glenda Hendricks and her husband, Glynn, of Savannah, Georgia, and Debora Montgomery and her husband, Donald, of Summerville, South Carolina; four sons, Burney Morris Cobb, Raymond D. Cobb, Sr. and his wife, Carol, Mark Cobb and Michael Cobb, all of Savannah, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Chris Collier, Brian Collier and his wife, Stephanie, B. J. Cobb, Shaun Montgomery, Jeffrey Montgomery, Catherine Montgomery, Carrie Montgomery, Raymond Cobb, Jr., Jessica Wynn and her husband, Lee, and Michael Cobb, and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon Thursday in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Dale D. Richardson. Interment, with full military honors, will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
