Brenda Emily Owens, 73, of Bloomingdale, GA, passed away after battling a long-term illness on November 29, 2021, with her family by her side.
She was born to the late James \"Buddy\" Duncan and Doris Madeline Lucas-Duncan on May 29, 1948 at Harlem Hospital in Harlem, New York.
Brenda graduated from Evander Childs in 1966 and later pursued her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from Tidewater Community College.?? She strongly believed in education and often home schooled her children in the summers all through grade school.
She married Joseph Henry Owens, whom she\'d known since she was 12 on August 12, 1967 at St. Mary\'s Catholic Church in Bronx, NY. They lived together there for twelve years before moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia and then several years later moved to Georgia where they finally settled in Bloomingdale.
Brenda is survived by her husband, and her three children: Theressa Owens Parker, of Newport News; Keisha Owens-Olufeso, of Atlanta; and Cherese Owens-Bryan, of Savannah. She is also survived by her sister, Valerie Robinson of New York, seven grandchildren: Tiara, Chavone, Isis, Phoenix, J.T., Michaela, and Noah, as well as seven great-grandchildren: Toni, Marquise, Tylynn, Christopher, Nick, Kai, and Destiny along with a host of family and friends.
Brenda was an accomplished homemaker and cook who always put her family first above her own desires and dreams. Outside of raising three successful children, one of her greatest accomplishments was working as a clerk to help put her husband through medical school at the very hospital she was born, Harlem Hospital, before focusing on taking care of her growing family. She was also very proud when she returned to school to study Early Childhood Development, which she put into practice after her children were of an age to accommodate her schooling, and which she used to become an in-home childcare provider who always had a waiting list, licensed in both VA and GA. Once her children had graduated and left home, and she settled in Bloomingdale where she continued providing daycare services as well as working at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School as an after school program director until she retired due to complications from her illness.
Brenda was an amazing woman who would do anything for anyone as long as she was able. She was a giver and modeled this for all those around her and it is one of the qualities that will live on for generations to come. Many were blessed by her kind heart and a few lucky ones by her favorite hobby, crocheting family heirlooms and gifts. She loved to travel when she was able, especially when it meant seeing her family or going to her most favorite place on earth, Orlando, FL, but specifically, Walt Disney World. She loved ALL things Disney and has an amazing collection of memorabilia. She was MOST happy when she was surrounded by family but especially her grand and great-grandchildren whom she loved very much and who bought her immense joy and peace. Brenda left these words in her Five Wishes for all of us to know upon her passing:?? \"Even though I may not be here any longer, know that I loved you and I will miss you until I see you again. 'Hakuna Matata\' because I have no more worries and neither should you.\"
The viewing ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Gamble Funeral Home in Savannah, GA, followed by a Catholic funeral in their chapel at 4 p.m.
The burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2021, at Beaufort National
Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting meals or gift baskets/cards to be sent to the family directly or for a donation to be made in Brenda\'s name to the American Diabetes Association - 233 Peachtree Street N.E., Suite 2225, Atlanta, Georgia 30303.
