BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - Billy Lee Watson, 78, of Bluffton, SC, passed away on July 15, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah, GA after a brief illness. Billy was born on July 29, 1930, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Lee and Lois Caldwell Watson.
After attending O'Keefe High School, Atlanta, GA, and a stint in the Marine Corps, Billy embarked on a diverse and lively professional career. His love of automobiles emerged at an early age. As a driver and later a car owner, Billy was a pioneer in the formative years of NASCAR and maintained close ties to the sport until his death. He previously owned Suncoast Motors in Bluffton and Prestige Motors in Atlanta. As an entrepreneur, he successfully opened and operated fifty-four night clubs and restaurants in Georgia, Florida, Ohio and the Carolinas. His charming personality, charisma, and savvy business skills were key components of his lifelong successes. In later years his focus shifted to real estate investment.
In addition to his parents, Billy was predeceased by his brother, Gordy. He is survived by wife, Karen, and sons, Brendan and Brody of the home, daughter, Debra Camp of Gainesville, GA, and son, David, and wife, Carole, of Charlotte. Also surviving are sisters, Norma Johnson of Alpharetta, GA, and Jackie, and husband, Don Walker, of Suwanee, GA and grandchildren, Robert "Beau", and wife, Tiffiney, Renfroe, Jr., Sheridan Renfroe, and Taylor Camp of Gainesville, Cara Watson of Raleigh, NC, Erin Watson of Charlotte, and Evan Watson of Pawleys Island, SC., and great-grandson, Cole Locascio of Atlanta.
Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at 2:30 PM at Mt. Paran Church of God, 2055 Mt. Paran Rd. in Atlanta. The service will be officiated by Dr. Donald M. Walker and Dr. Paul L. Walker. Visitation will be at 1:00.
