Betty Bernice Katz Smithberg 89, a resident of Buckingham South, died Wednesday morning, May 8, 2013 surrounded by children and under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Katz and the late Tillie Feldman Katz, sister to the late Ben Katz, the late Abe Katz, the late Julius Katz, and the late Lilly Katz Weitzbuck, Mary Katz Weiner of St. Louis, Missouri, and Sadie Katz Hamer of West Bloomfield, Michigan. She was a graduate of East St. Louis High School and she worked for the Red Cross when she met her husband of 67 years, the late Major Maurice 'Smitty' Solomon Smithberg, U. S. Air Force Reserves (Ret.). After the Korean War, the family moved to Beaufort, South Carolina where they raised their three children. During the years, Betty worked as a substitute teacher for the Beaufort County School System. She was also active in the Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader. Her most important job was being a homemaker and a mother to her three children. She was there for each of them daily after school, and when asked how she did such a good job raising her children, she responded that she always 'basted them slowly.'
Surviving are two daughters, Janet O'Hara and her husband, Greg, of Savannah and Joan Schochet and her husband, Robert, of Atlanta; one son, Fred Smithberg and his wife, Alicia, of Savannah; five grandchildren, Ryan O'Hara, Logan Schochet and his wife, Nicole, Mallory O'Hara, Teri and Annie Smithberg and one great-grandson, Brody Schochet.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
