Benjamin Hirsh Neufeld

d. September 1, 2009

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Benjamin Hirsh Neufeld, 97, of Savannah, Georgia, died peacefully at home on August 31, 2009.
A native of New York, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale where he resided for twenty-two years. In 1999 he moved to Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, to whom he was married for sixty-four years. They had a truly special relationship, filled with love, admiration, and concern for each other.
He is survived by his devoted children: Dr. Laurence Neufeld and his wife Dede, of Tampa, Florida; Arlene and her husband Dr. Michel Steinfeldt of Savannah; and Dr. Elizabeth Neufeld of Savannah. He was the loving grandfather of Dr. Andrew Berens and wife Frances; Dr. Lisa Scott and husband Andrew; Carolyn  Slipakoff and husband David; Michael Neufeld and wife Nicole; George Neufeld; Daniel Neufeld; Zachary Boven; and Jessica Bovan. He was the beloved uncle of Mace Neufeld, Carol Heller, Mickey Robbins, Ben Robbins, Andy Reyman-Cruz, Lynn Reyman Campeas, Mark Reyman, Randy Shedlin, and Jamie Shedlin. Many great-grandchildren also survive him.
Hardworking, he did not fully retire until the age of eighty-five. At the age of ninety-two, following the death of his wife, he began playing duplicate bridge, and three years later, he became a senior master, an incredible accomplishment. He was respected and loved by all of his bridge partners and opponents, not only for his talent as a bridge player, but also for his passion for life.
Bridge introduced Ben to many new friends, especially to his favorite partner, Gale Cartledge. Gale was a great friend and a surrogate daughter to Ben. She, along with her husband, Gene, significantly enhanced the quality and enjoyment of his life.
Ben was known for his devotion to family and friends and served as a role model to old and young alike. Over the years, he developed close relationships here in Savannah, especially with Mary and Stratton Leopold. He will be missed by all whose lives were touched by him.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery.
Remembrances:  American Cancer Society - Suite 206, 6600 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
