Barbara Jean Surrency Harman, 90, passed away on February 18, 2022, after a prolonged illness.
She was born December 12, 1931, in Tampa, FL to W.D. and Henrietta J. Surrency. She moved with her parents to Savannah, GA, as a small child, when the Seaboard Railroad transferred her father. Barbara had a happy childhood growing up in Vernonburg, where she enjoyed swimming with her childhood friends in the rivers. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1950 and went to work as a telephone operator with Southern Bell. At the age of twenty-one, she married Walter Carl Harman on June 13, 1953. They were members of Calvary Baptist Temple and raised three children in the Magnolia Park neighborhood, where she and Carl lived for many years and made treasured friends. She loved to dance, exercise and volunteered as a Yoga instructor at the YMCA. Being active was an important part of her life. Barbara and Carl became avid walkers and walked together most every day in Forsyth Park. She was a naturally gifted artist who enjoyed painting, cross stitching, and ceramics. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Barbara was fortunate to have life-long friends she grew up with and stayed close to throughout her life. She was a sweet, beautiful lady who adored and loved her family, and she was the best wife, mother, and 'Mimi' anyone could ask for. She is much loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Walter Carl Harman; three children, Dr. C. Eric Harman (Nancy), Mrs. Lisa Harman Moore (Craig), Mrs. Lynn Harman Alexander (Glenn); four grandchildren, Mr. Brian Harman (Kelly), Dr. Scott Harman (Laurel), Mr. Matthew Moore (Olivia), Miss Carlie Moore; four great-grandchildren, Cooper Marie Harman, Walter Harman, Easton Harman, Waylon Harman; a loving sister, Avalyn Ann Moser of Groveland, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at the graveside, Hillcrest Abbey - East.
