Azarrene Gaither Harris was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on August 15, 1918, to the late William Green Gaither and Carrie Barber Gaither. She was known to all as 'Rene'. She departed this life on July 6, 2015. She spent her early formative years in South Carolina until the family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.



After graduating from Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, NC, she relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey. She was a dedicated member of Church of the Incarnation Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir. Rene was employed for several years by a sweater manufacturer. She performed much volunteer work with the elderly in her church and community. Her charitable efforts sparked an interest in pursuing a nursing career. Rene then attended nursing school at Jersey Medical Center, where she received her Licensed Practical Nursing degree. Rene worked as a dedicated nurse for over 25 years until her retirement in the 1970's.



After retirement, Rene relocated to Savannah, Georgia to be close to her younger sister, Mozella Gaither Collier and her family. Rene later joined and became an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she participated in various church and community activities including singing in the choir. She was a talented seamstress, creating many beautiful additions to her wardrobe.



Those left to treasure her memory are: Jessie Gaither Dixon (sister), Jewel Gaither (sister- in-law), Evolia Gaither Hayes (sister), Clyde Hayes (brother-in-law), Shirley Gaither Barber (sister), Howard Barber (brother-in-law), Odessa Gaither (sister-in-law), Lenora 'Bunny' Scurry (Goddaughter), John Gaither (Godson), nieces, nephews, cousins, hosts of other relatives and special caring long-term friends: Deacon Sue Gahagan and The Very Reverend William Willoughby III, Dean and Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.



A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, July 18, 2015, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church conducted by The Very Reverend Dr. William Willoughby III.
