Avis Hatch Cheney

Avis Rahe Cheney of Savannah, Georgia went home to be with her Lord on September 29, 2020, surrounded by her family and under the loving care of Georgia Hospice Care and Buckingham South.
She was born on February 14, 1931 in Hatch Bend, Florida where she was raised on her family farm. After graduating from Lafayette High School, she married her husband, Howard Euell Cheney, on August 15, 1948 and, thereafter, moved to Branford, Florida where they would raise their family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was well known for preparing amazing meals which she generously shared with family and friends and often served others with her sewing and decorating skills. Additionally, she had a long career in civil service beginning with the Farm Bureau in Live Oak, Florida, then as a Postmaster in O'Brien, Florida and finally as Postmaster in Branford, Florida where she retired in 1992. In 2002, after she and Howard retired, they moved to Savannah, Georgia. She enjoyed serving many years as a Ruling Elder, Clerk of Session, lifetime member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Branford Presbyterian Church and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah. Her deeply rooted relationship with the Lord led her to publicly share her faith for more than 40 years as a devoted Sunday School Teacher. Avis loved spending time with her family, making beautiful handmade keepsakes for her children and grandchildren, and was always an avid Florida Gator fan.
Avis will be deeply missed by her children, Andy Cheney (Susan) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Cynthia Cheney DeLoach (Eddie) of Savannah, Georgia; Grandchildren, Tara DeLoach Rocker (Walt) of Eatonton, Georgia, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell (Chris) of Atlanta, Georgia, Adam Wayne DeLoach (DeAnna) of Savannah, Georgia, Margaret (Meg) Cheney Coleman (Rutledge) of Asheville, North Carolina; nine Great-Grandchildren; and her sister, Jeanette Hatch Cason (Lou) of Savannah, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Howard; parents, Lonnie and Mae (Lindsey) Hatch; and sisters, Gertrude Lackey, Lyndal Hatch, and Dorothy Hawkins.
The family will hold a private service on Saturday, October 3, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
