Arthur James "AJ" Lungwitz, age 74, of Savannah passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
Mr. Lungwitz was born on September 30, 1948 in Sheboygan, WI, the son of the late Anna Netzel Lungwitz and Arthur Lungwitz. He was a graduate of Kohler High School, continued his formal education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and ultimately completed his graduate studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, earning a degree in Environmental Science. He also attended seminary in Chicago, IL. He worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, retiring after 28 years of service as an Environmental Specialist. AJ also worked as a Park Ranger with Horseshoe Bend National Park in Alabama and served as a firefighter in Chatham County, serving Tybee Island, Southside, and Thunderbolt. He attended Lutheran Church of the Ascension and St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was active with the choir. AJ was a Master Gardener and a member of The German Friendly Society of Savannah.
Mr. Lungwitz is survived by his loving wife, Laurie A. Hiers; and son, Christian Pfister.
AJ lived by the saying, "You make a living by what you get...you make a life by what you give."
The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2023 at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2023 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the committal service following at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Nature Conservancy, The Georgia Natural Resources Foundation, The American Red Cross, or to Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer Research.
