Arthur Elijah New, better known as “Ike”, passed away at home on May 29, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Ike was born on February 28, 1953, in Talladega, AL, to Ruth and Ralph New. Those who knew him would agree, he was an unconventional man. He had an unconventional upbringing, unconventional tact, unconventional wisdom, and unconventional love. Unconventional, in his context, is not to be mistaken for less than; in fact, it is to suggest the opposite. He had a great compassion for anyone who had less, was in need, or fell on hard times. Yet, at the same time, he wasn’t much for sugar-coating or beating around the bush or appeasing situations. Those who were subject to his unconventional love might describe it as a love which he seemed to find overwhelming at times.
Life’s circumstances had him leaving formal schooling prior to completing the 9th grade. He worked many jobs over the years, gaining his unconventional wisdom. He worked construction; he was a disc jockey at popular disco clubs; he danced professionally; he worked in sales and would one day become a business owner and operator. He had an incredible work ethic doing whatever it took, with whatever he had to survive, and to later provide.
In 1977 he moved to Savannah, GA, where he met the love of his life, Beth, to whom he was married for 41 years. She, along with his children and grandchildren, were witness to his unconventional love. He had long been coddled by Beth, but the selfless care she gave him during his ailing years was nothing short of the devoted love she had vowed to him, in sickness and in health. Together they started Clearwater Pools and Patios in 1995 with the notion of creating a company that would grow with a reputation for quality, honesty, and service. This company continues to be owned and operated by Beth and their sons and continues to provide for them and their families.
Ike’s unconventional nature and rippling effect on this world will continue through his surviving wife, Beth; his sons, Brandon (Caroline), Cristian (Mallory), and Shane (Olivia); his daughter Shannon (Tim); his sister, Linda; his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph, his mother, Ruth, and his brother, Roy.
There will be a visitation on June 3, 2024 from 5-7 pm at Gamble Funeral Service- 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405).
The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please help someone who may be in need.
